Peter Schmeichel believes that if Manchester United “should have any regrets”, it is that they sacked David Moyes too soon.

United appointed Moyes in summer 2013 as Sir Alex Ferguson’s replacement.

The former Everton manager lasted just 11 months in the post before being sacked in April 2014, with Ryan Giggs taking his place in the interim.

Louis van Gaal was then appointed in summer 2014 but he himself was removed for Jose Mourinho two years later.

The club have finally found some apparent stability under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s temporary guidance, the Norwegian appointed when Mourinho left the club in December.

United have won ten of their 11 games under Solskjaer, finally returning to the top four with a resounding win over Fulham on Saturday.

But Schmeichel believes the club’s problems have all stemmed from not giving Moyes, who lost 15 of his 51 games in charge of the reigning Premier League champions, enough time.

”If we should have any regrets at Manchester United, that is that we only gave David Moyes seven months,” he told beIN SPORTS, doing much the same as Moyes did and pretty much ignoring the entire pre-season he was afforded.

“I think we should have given him more time, accepted that results were not going to be the way they hoped it would be, and playing would have been a little different.

“‘I believe he would have grown into the role. He has the personality and the understanding. He had so many things to learn and he didn’t have anybody to learn it from. He was left, basically, to run the football department on his own.”

Put to him (completely justifiably) that sacking assistant manager Mike Phelan and bringing in his entire own support staff was therefore a “mistake”, Schmeichel replied:

“I think that really would have helped him, had he had somebody with that kind of experience.

“But I also understand where he’s coming from, you know? And he did think that he brought that experience, the Manchester United experience, from Phil Neville. So he had someone there, he was thinking along those lines.

“I don’t think he wanted somebody there who had worked with Sir Alex. I can understand that. Maybe when you look back, that was a mistake.

“But from the club’s perspective we should never ever have dismissed him, because that led us into making rash decisions. So we bring in a name and that went completely wrong.

“Had we brought in Mourinho instead of Louis van Gaal, I’m sure that history would have told us that it would have been better. It would have been so much better for him to come in at that point rather than after Van Gaal.

“This is too many things that happened, too many players were brought in that didn’t suit him, and possibly didn’t suit Manchester United as well.

“But you know, we go back, we’re a football club, we look at our history, and we go back and we look at the number of years from when Sir Matt stopped and retired in 1970, and all the way up to 1986 – and it still took Fergie from ’86 to ’93 to seal the first championship.

“So United is the kind of club that will always bounce back. This time we just hope it’s a bit quicker. And I have to say, the way it’s going, I’m for Ole.”
