Manchester United’s summer transfer priority remains a centre-back despite their upturn in form, according to reports.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has overseen an amazing turnaround in fortunes at Old Trafford since he replaced Jose Mourinho as caretaker manager.

The Norwegian has won nine of his first 10 matches in charge of the Red Devils with their attack and defence vastly improved.

One player Solskjaer has managed to get the best out of is Victor Lindelof, who has been transformed into the composed ball-playing centre-half that United thought they were signing in 2017.

However, the Evening Standard claims that Ed Woodward will make ‘significant funds’ available in the summer as the club look to add another centre-back.

Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane was the subject of interest from United last summer with the club willing to pay £100million to land the Frenchman.

Former United defender Wes Brown reckons Varane would be the “dream” choice for the Red Devils.

“The dream defender for United would be Rafael Varane,” Brown told the Evening Standard. “He would cost a lot and it would need to be the right fit for United.

“It’s difficult to say as United have a lot of defenders to choose from, and Solskjaer will want players to justify their positions on the pitch.”

The report continues by saying that United retain hope that Napoli will be more open to doing business over their defender Kalidou Koulibaly, who was the Red Devils’ ‘primary target’ in Janaury.

However, the Italian club reportedly rejected two bids from the Premier League outfit for the Senegal international.

Koulibaly is understood to be keen on a move to the Premier League but United still have interest in a number of other players, including Toby Alderweireld, Harry Maguire, Milan Skriniar and Alessio Romagnoli.
