Manchester United are ‘seriously considering’ appointing Rio Ferdinand as their new sporting director.
As part of their desperation to appoint absolutely anyone who has played for, coached or watched United on television at any point in their lives, Ferdinand has been identified as a potential sporting director.
The Daily Mail say his ‘United history and subsequent business experience, which includes a clothing company and restaurant,’ appeals to executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward. And that line will never not be hilarious. They’re appointing someone to oversee their transfers on the basis that he can sell branded hats.
Woodward is said to be ‘seriously considering’ Ferdinand as a candidate, with the Glazer family having ‘tried to bring him back to the club before’ in a boardroom role.
Ferdinand’s ‘personal circumstances made that unworkable,’ but Woodward has since ‘opened discussions’ to see if Ferdinand would be open to the possibility.
The 40-year-old’s’ analytical approach as a BT Sport pundit’ has also impressed the club, and could see him placed in a role which will ‘guide transfer strategy and oversee negotiations while being in tune with the manager’.
United are thought to be trying to emulate Champions League semi-finalists Ajax’s success. The Dutch club have appointed former players Edwin van der Sar and Marc Overmars to high-rank positions despite a lack of prior experience. So United want to use their ‘rich heritage’ to bring in not only Ferdinand, but possibly Darren Fletcher alongside Mike Phelan as technical director.
Jesus.
