Ole Gunnar Solskjaer thinks Manchester United’s chances of challenging for the Premier League title next season are slim.
United had a resurgence after sacking Mourinho and appointing Solskjaer, who won 14 of his 19 games while in caretaker charge of the club, but it is now seven defeats in his last 11 matches, highlighting the scale of the rebuilding job ahead in the summer.
“Challenging for the title next year would be a miraculous season because we are so far behind at the moment, points-wise,” Solskjaer said.
“Next season, we’ve got to close that gap. If we manage to get to February or March and being close then that’s fantastic.”

Solskjaer added: “We know as staff and players that next season we’ve got a great challenge ahead. It’s going to be important that we come together from the very first day. Pre-season is going to be important.”
When asked what United fans have got to look forward to, Solskjaer continued: “It is not like when I used to play, us or Arsenal would win the league.
“Now it is a very competitive competition and that tells us that it is going to be a great challenge. We want to get back to where we sued to be. Next season we’ve got a great challenge ahead.”
