Pep Guardiola ‘sought out’ Manchester United midfielder Fred in the tunnel after the Brazilian was subjected to racist abuse.
Fred had bottles and lighters thrown at him as he prepared to take a corner during United’s victory over Manchester City on Saturday.
A home fan was also seen making apparent monkey gestures at the midfielder, and has been arrested on suspicion of committing a racially aggravated public order offence.
Fred lamented at such a “backwards society” after the game, with The Times and ESPN both claiming City boss Guardiola made an effort to ensure the player was OK.
The Times say Guardiola ‘consoled’ Fred in the tunnel at the Etihad, having been ‘concerned’ about his welfare after the incident.
Chief executive Ferran Soriano also spoke with United director David Gill and ‘assured him that he would ban the individual in question if he was found guilty of racist conduct’.
