Kasper Schmeichel thinks Leicester City were in the game until “the referee had to make himself a hero” in their 4-0 loss to Liverpool.
Fresh from their Club World Cup victory in Qatar last weekend, Jurgen Klopp’s side continued their march towards the league title in devastating fashion.
After Roberto Firmino’s first-half opener Liverpool scored three goals in eight sublime second-half minutes, with a James Milner penalty followed by Firmino’s second and a rasping first-time drive from Trent Alexander-Arnold.
And Schmeichel felt the second goal was crucial in their heavy defeat to the Premier League leaders.
“We were in the game until the referee had to make himself a hero,” Schmeichel said on Amazon Prime Video.
“From then on, we lost our composure – they are the best team in the world at the moment, but it is important for us not to lose sight of the big picture.
“We are very early into our journey. These teams are who we aspire to be like, but they are a lot further into their journey than we are.
“If someone had offered us this position at the start of the season, we would have taken it, so it is important to have a bit of perspective as well.”
