Juncker: Let’s use Article 49 to let the Brits rejoin EU
‘Once the British have left under Article 50 there is still Article 49.’
European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker told MEPs Wednesday that the U.K. could rejoin the EU after Brexit using Article 49 of the Lisbon Treaty, Reuters reported.
“Once the British have left under Article 50 there is still Article 49 which allows a return to membership and I would like that,” he said.
His suggestion came a day after European Council President Donald Tusk suggested he was open to a “change of heart” from the U.K. on Brexit.
Juncker backed him up later Tuesday, saying, “I hope that will be heard clearly in London,” according to the Independent.
Article 49 simply spells out how a country may join the EU, and would require unanimous approval from the European Parliament and member countries.
