WASHOUGAL, WA — Two people visiting Washington from Germany were killed Tuesday afternoon when a car ran them over as they sunbathed at a riverside beach in the southwest part of the state, according to authorities.

The incident happened around 5 p.m. when a man in his 70s drove his Jeep through a fence and onto the beach at Sandy Swimming Hole Park. The driver kept going after he ran over the man and woman, eventually crashing into a sign, according to the Camas Post-Record.

The driver was arrested about five hours after the incident, according to reports. Both victims died after being transported to a local hospital. Their identities had not been released as of Wednesday morning.

The Sandy Swimming Hole Park is about 17 miles east of Vancouver. The park is situated along the Washougal River just north of the Columbia River.
