BALTIMORE, MD — Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson was unanimously named the NFL Most Valuable Player on Saturday night, joining Tom Brady in 2010 as the only player to receive all 50 first-place votes for the award.
The 23-year-old is also the second youngest player in league history to secure the top prize for an individual performer. Only NFL legend Jim Brown was younger, winning back-to-back MVP awards in 1957 and 1958.
Jackson put together a historic campaign in the 2019 season. The second-year pass thrower out of Louisville was the first player ever to produce over 3,000 yards passing and 1,000 yards rushing in a single season.
He finished the year with 3,127 passing yards, 1,206 rushing yards and 43 total touchdowns.
Jackson wasn’t the only Raven to take home an award Saturday. Ravens coach John Harbaugh was named the 2019 NFL Coach of the Year during the NFL Honors in Miami, Florida.
It’s the first time Harbaugh has won the award and the first time a Ravens coach has ever been honored with the Coach of the Year distinction. Harbaugh garnered 27.5 votes, beating out San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan and Green Bay Packers coach Matt LaFluer.
Jackson is now the youngest quarterback to ever be named NFL MVP. He adds the honor to a list that already features accolades such as the youngest quarterback to start an NFL playoff game, the youngest quarterback to start in the Pro Bowl and the youngest player to win the Heisman Trophy in college.
Jackson was a heavy favorite to win the MVP award throughout the season, leading the Ravens to a 14-2 record and the No. 1 seed in the AFC. The team’s Super Bowl aspirations were short-lived, though, losing to the Tennessee Titans 28-12 in the Divisional Round, but Jackson still accounted for 508 yards of total offense in the game.
Jackson beat out Seattle’s Russell Wilson and Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes to take home the award.
“I’m still young,” Jackson told reporters Saturday. “I’ve still got a lot of work to do. I’m not really trying to dwell on what I just did. If I win a Super Bowl, you’ll probably see a lot more emotion.”
Jackson is the first Ravens player to win the MVP award in team history.
