KAUA’I, HI —Lori Vallow, the mother of two children who have been missing from Idaho since September, was arrested Thursday in Hawaii and charged with two felony counts of desertion and nonsupport of dependent children, Kaua’i police said.
The 47-year-old Vallow, who previously lived in Phoenix, was arrested on a warrant from Madison County, Idaho, and is being held on $5 million bond in Hawaii.
The children, 7-year-old Joshua “J.J.” Vallow and 17-year-old Tylee Ryan, were last seen in Rexburg, Idaho, in late September. Police have said they “strongly believe that Joshua and Tylee’s lives are in danger.”
Authorities searched in four states in the tangled missing persons case involving rumors of a religious cult, doomsday preparations, several suspicious deaths and an abandoned storage unit filled with the children’s belongings.
Vallow moved to Idaho just weeks after the July death of her husband, Charles Vallow, who was shot and killed in their Phoenix home by her brother, Alex Cox, who claimed the shooting was in self-defense. Cox died of unknown causes in December.

She married doomsday prepper Chad Daybell two weeks after the death of his wife, Tammy Daybell. Authorities are treating her death as suspicious, and her remains have been exhumed.
The results of tests on the bodies of Cox and Tammy Daybell have not been released.
Authorities have said that Vallow and Daybell have lied about the whereabouts of the children, and even that they ever existed. The Associated Press reported that Chad Daybell allegedly told one person that Vallow had no children, and she allegedly told another person that her daughter had died about a year earlier.
Vallow and Daybell were spotted in Kaua’i, Hawaii in January. Police pulled over their vehicle and them, and then served her with an order to return to Idaho with her children. She ignored it, authorities said.

In addition to the more serious felony charges, Vallow also is charged with arrests and seizures – resisting or obstructing officers, criminal solicitation to commit a crime, and contempt of court – willful disobedience of court process or order, police said.
A hearing date has yet to be determined to give Vallow an opportunity to waive or fight extradition to Idaho.
“The children were last seen in Idaho and there is no indication that they are on Kauai,” police said in a statement. “There are currently no criminal charges against Vallow on Kauai.”
According to divorce papers filed by Charles Vallow before his death, Lori Vallow believes she is “a god assigned to carry out the work of the 144,000 at Christ’s second coming in July 2020.”
Chad Daybell has written several apocalyptic novels that are based loosely on the religious theology of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
