MAYO, MD — The past few weeks have been heartbreaking for David Cook of Mayo who had been desperately searching for his incredibly sweet but skittish beagle-border collie mix Fancy. He hoped she would be found before her third birthday Feb. 2 and thanks to a host of people keeping an eye out for her, she has been safely returned home — but not before traveling 13 miles.

Cook told Patch that Fancy was being babysat by his son New Year’s Eve while he was out of town and that’s when she got loose.

“There were a lot of fireworks going off, which scares her, and she got out the door. She’s been gone since Jan. 1. We really miss her. We’ve had her since she was a puppy,” Cook told Patch.

Fancy quickly became a statistic that no one wants to hear. The American Humane Association estimates more than 10 million dogs and cats are lost or stolen in the U.S. every year and one in three pets will become lost at some point during their life.

Because Fancy is so skittish, Cook asked that people not approach her but instead offer her food and water from a distance, then contact him. Fancy had been spotted out and about, but quite a ways from home. She ended up at Cook’s daughter’s house of all places.

“She trekked more than 13 miles,” Cook said.

Thankfully, Fancy wasn’t hurt, but she definitely was exhausted. Her humans took her in for a bath and then to the vet to have her checked out. Cook is both relieved and overjoyed at the safe return of his beloved dog.
