Multiple sources since this morning have confirmed that the 2017 Royal Rumble will be held in San Antonio.
It would mark the 20th anniversary of the biggest Royal Rumble live event in history, the 1997 version that was held in San Antonio at the Alamodome, and drew 60,525 fans, with 48,014 paid, built around Shawn Michaels vs. Sycho Sid, with Michaels regaining the WWF title in his home city.
The announcement is expected to take place this coming week.
Steve Austin won that Royal Rumble, which had a heavy influence of AAA and Mexican talent, including legends like Mil Mascaras, Canek, Perro Aguayo, Perro Aguayo Jr., Latin Lover, Hector Garza, Pierroth, Fuerza Guerrera, Blue Demon Jr. and Octagon appearing on the show.
The 2017 Royal Rumble will be a combined-brand PPV, so presumably 15 of the wrestlers will be from Raw and 15 will be from Smackdown and the winner will challenge for his brand’s title at this year’s WrestleMania.
UPDATE: WWE officially announced on Friday afternoon that the Alamodome in San Antonio, TX would host the 2017 Royal Rumble on January 29th.
