Dina Powell, the former deputy national security adviser who is in the running to replace Nikki Haley at the UN, is seen as an influential voice on the Middle East and adept at forging powerful relationships.

Donald Trump said on Tuesday he would consider selecting the Goldman Sachs executive as the next ambassador to the United Nations, hours after announcing Ms Haley would step down at the end of the year.

The US president said Ms Haley would help him make the final pick for her replacement before revealing later that there were five people on his short list for the job. 

"Dina would love it," Mr Trump said later on board Air Force One.
