A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Nine Saint John’s underclassmen competed at the Rochester Community & Technical College Open in the Johnnies’ 2015-16 wrestling season opener on Sunday (Nov. 1). Freshman Luke Dodd (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) claimed second place at 184 pounds. He tallied a pin in his first-round match and then an 8-2 decision, but fell by a narrow 5-4 score to Division II MSU-Moorhead’s Austin May in the championship match. Freshman Muqkadeen Poole (Newark, N.J./St. Benedict’s Prep) was the lone Johnnie to post three wins on the day. He registered a 55-second pin in his first collegiate match but dropped the second-round bout by a 6-1 score. Poole battled back with a 17-0 technical fall and another pin, but lost to MSU-Moorhead’s Brayden Kuntz in the consolation semifinal.
RANKINGS: Henle was ranked ninth nationally in both the D3wrestle.com and the National Wrestling Coaches’ Association (NWCA) preseason rankings at 141 pounds. Henle made his second consecutive trip to nationals and posted a career-high 26 wins (26-10 record) in 2014-15.
LAST YEAR: SJU started its 2014-15 season by placing four individuals in the top six at last year’s Wisconsin-Stevens Point Open. Senior John Wells (Janesville, Wis./Milton) finished third at 125 pounds with a 3-1 record. He posted a major decision in the quarterfinal before falling by a 7-4 decision in the semis. He bounced back with an 8-4 decision before recording an 11-4 win over the Pointers’ Ben Vosters in the third-place match.
Senior Ben Henle (Spicer, Minn./New London-Spicer), who was ranked as high as ninth by the NWCA, took fifth at 141 pounds with a 3-2 record. Both of his losses were to non-Division III wrestlers: a 6-5 loss to Division I Wisconsin’s Luke Rowh in the semifinal and 13-8 to Division II Wisconsin-Parkside’s Pernevellon Shepperd in the consolation semifinal. Sophomore Chris Ortman (Pierz, Minn.) claimed sixth at 133 pounds. He lost his semifinal match by a 4-2 decision to Parkside’s Joseph Her and medical forfeited his final two matches.
WHO WILL BE THERE: In addition to SJU and the host Pointers, other schools expected to be represented Saturday include Concordia (Wis.), Elmhurst (Ill.), Lakeland (Wis.), Wheaton (Ill.), Wisconsin-Eau Claire, Wisconsin-Oshkosh, Wisconsin-Platteville and No. 11 Wisconsin-Whitewater.
