A familiar rival looks to best Kazuchika Okada in the not too distant future to keep his legacy alive.

After Okada successfully defended the IWGP Heavyweight title against Zack Sabre Jr. at Sakura Genesis, Hiroshi Tanahashi came out to challenge him. Okada questioned why — he brought up that in recent months he’s been injured, lost the Intercontinental title and lost the New Japan Cup.

But it does make sense, as beating Tanahashi would not only set the record for most consecutive title defenses in the IWGP title’s history, it would also be besting Hiroshi Tanahashi’s record of 11 title defenses, which Okada tied last night. He did accept Tanahashi’s challenge, setting them up for a IWGP title match down the line. That may happen at Dominion, which takes place on 6/9.

Another title match set involves the IWGP Jr. heavyweight champion, Will Ospreay. After defeating Marty Scurll in a tremendous bout, Ospreay called out KUSHIDA, who was doing commentary. He said that he wanted to prove that defeating him wasn’t a fluke. KUSHIDA accepted his challenge, setting the stage for a future title match.

Tetsuya Naito also made clear that he was interested in the Intercontinental title following a tag match that involved him and Minoru Suzuki, who have been feuding during the entirety of the tour. Naito made the challenge, then laid down and posed as Suzuki entered the ring and verbally laid into him. Naito later said something that angered Suzuki, causing him to destroy things on the outside. That may be headlining Wrestling Dontaku next month, though that is yet to be confirmed.

New Japan’s next big event is Wrestling Dontaku, which takes place on May 3 and 4 in Fukuoka.
