No. 20 NDSU Downs No. 19 Chattanooga 28-10 at National Duals; Faces Minnesota Sunday Evening
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 20 North Dakota State wrestling team won its opening match of the EAS/NWCA National Duals against No. 19 Chattanooga 28-10 Sunday, Feb. 16, at St. John Arena.
The Bison move to the quarterfinals to take on top-ranked Minnesota at 6 p.m. (CT) Sunday. The Golden Gophers are ranked first in the USA Today/NWCA/AWN Division I Coaches Poll and WIN’s Feb. 3, 2014 Tournament Power Index. Minnesota is looking to win its third-consecutive National Duals title.
Redshirt freshman Hunter Weber got the Bison an early 6-0 lead over the Mocs by getting a pin with 2 seconds left in the first period at 125 pounds.
NDSU senior Justin LaValle and third-ranked Steven Monk earned victories over ranked opponents for the Bison.
LaValle scored two points late in the third period at 133 pounds to force overtime at 4-4 and then made a takedown in the first sudden victory period for the win over No. 11/12 Nick Soto. Monk won his 18th straight match of the season with a 4-0 decision over No. 12/9 Corey Mock.
Tyler Lehmann earned his eighth pin in the nine duals he’s competed for NDSU this season, getting a fall at the 1:16 mark of the first period over Chattanooga’s Scottie Boykin.

Bison senior Tyler Diamond won his fifth straight match with a 9-5 decision at 149 pounds, No. 11 Hayden Zillmer picked up his 10th win out of his last 11 matches with an 11-3 major decision at 174 pounds and No. 23 Kurtis Julson earned his sixth consecutive victory with a 6-2 decision at 184 pounds.
With the win, the Bison are now 10-4 in duals this season heading into the matchup against No. 1 Minnesota.
