ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Minnesota State University Moorhead junior Zach Scott qualified for the NCAA Division II national wrestling tournament on Saturday afternoon by finishing fourth at the Super Region 3 tournament. Scott qualified at 141 pounds.

Scott started the day in the championship semifinals, where he lost to Jarred Oftedahl of St. Cloud State by a 9-1 major decision, which sent him into the consolation round. In his first consolation match, he defeated Danny Swan of Lindenwood via fall in 5:52 to put himself in the third-place match, where he lost a 10-3 decision to Will Roark of Maryville University.

Scott is now 17-15 on the season.

“Zach wrestled a good tournament and recorded three pins,” MSUM head coach Kris Nelson said. “You can never count him out of a match and that showed this weekend. We are very happy for Zach and now are looking to prepare him for the national tournament.”

At 125 pounds, freshman Cole Jones also started the day in the championship semifinals, but he lost a 6-3 decision to Brett Velasquez of St. Cloud State. In his first consolation match, he lost a major decision to Maleek Williams, putting him in the fifth-place match, where he defeated Andrew McFall of Minnesota State Mankato to pick up a fifth-place finish. Jones finished the year 20-13.

“Cole earned valuable experience as a freshman,” Nelson said. “He has a very aggressive style and is always looking to score points.”

The other Dragon to wrestle on the day was Joe Schumacher, who took fifth at 149 pounds after also starting his day in the championship semifinals. The D1 transfer lost a 7-4 decision to McKendree’s Isaiah Kemper in the semifinal match to send him to the consolation bracket, where he lost to Nate Trepanier of Lindenwood via decision to put him in the fifth-place match, where he pulled out a win over Kyle Rathman of Minnesota State Mankato 8-4. Schumacher, who joined the team mid-year, finished 6-2.

“Joe Schumacher wrestled a good tournament but came up short of qualifying for the national tournament,” Nelson said. “We’re looking for him to have him back for two more years and see him having a good future with the Dragon wrestling program.”
