The second annual gathering of thousands of progressive activists and leaders, which runs from June 9 to 11 in Chicago, comes as Democrats are still reeling from tough losses in the 2016 election.
Following President Trump’s upset victory, there has been an anti-Trump backlash from Democrats and liberals that has resulted in protests nationwide. The theme of this year’s “People’s Summit” is moving “beyond the resistance” and the protests.

“There is no force more powerful than a community on the move for justice. We will protest, we will plan and we will preserve in the building of political power from the ground up. This is our moment,” said Nina Turner, a prominent Sanders surrogate during the Democratic primary.

Other prominent attendees include his wife, Jane; Linda Sarsour, a Sanders delegate at the Democratic National Convention last summer; filmmaker Michael Moore; CNN commentator Van Jones; progressive group Democratic Socialists of America; and National Nurses United, the first national labor group to endorse Sanders’s presidential campaign.
“With our institutions of liberal democracy severely eroded and fascism knocking at our front doors, the time is now for activists, organizers and Berniecrats to come together and imagine an America and world that looks far beyond the horizon of establishment politics as usual,” said Winnie Wong, co-founder of People For Bernie.
