At 44-years-old, the lucha libre sensation Rey Mysterio has been wrestling for more than three decades, but until recently he has kept the looming threat of retirement on the horizon. Ever since returning from injury earlier this summer, he hasn’t been able to pick up a win, or even come close to victory in most cases.
After being mauled by Bobby Lashley in a borderline squash match back in July, Mysterio lost both a battle royale for a Universal Championship opportunity, and a gauntlet match for a U.S. Championship opportunity. In trying to get the ball rolling again, the Master of the 619 next lost to Andrade two weeks ago, before dropping two straight falls to him in less than 6 minutes last week.
Mysterio was interviewed backstage on Monday Night Raw this week to address the rumors of his retirement, and gave a very emotional monologue about his body not being as quick and responsive as it used to be, and claimed that it was time to hang up his mask.
Just as the legendary luchador was about to take off his own mask and call it a career, his son Dominik stopped him and made him promise to keep fighting until he can make his own in-ring debut, so that he can tell his future children that he was able to partner with their grandfather, the great Rey Mysterio Jr.
