Roy Keane and Jamie Carragher were involved in a heated debate on Sky Sports as they argued whether Liverpool’s Sadio Mane is better than Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs.
The duo were appearing on Monday Night Football with the former rivals asked to choose a combined XI from the current Liverpool side and the Manchester United team that won the treble in 1999.
After Carragher selected a 4-3-3 formation, currently deployed by Liverpool and picked David Beckham, Paul Scholes and Keane in a midfield three, presenter David Jones then asked Keane: “Does that three work for you, with Beckham tucked in there?”
KEANE: Yeah, I’m just worried where we’re going to fit the other United lads in, we’ve got Giggsy…
CARRAGHER: Giggs is not going in my team.
KEANE: Really?
CARRAGHER: No… I’ve got a front three.
KEANE: I’m stunned.
CARRAGHER: I love Ryan Giggs. I’m not judging him on his career, I’m judging him on the 1999 season. Do you know how many goals he scored that season?
KEANE: Four?
CARRAGHER: Is that enough for you to get in that team?
KEANE: No, but…
CARRAGHER: Now let’s get to my front three. I think Mane right now is the best left-sided attacker or winger in the world, I do believe that.
I love Ryan Giggs, one of the greats of the Premier League history, longevity all that, playing to 40, but I don’t think at any one stage he was probably the best in that position, you may disagree, you know him better than me.
But I think the numbers that Mane is getting now are a lot more than Giggs got in that season.
KEANE: The key to greatness is to be consistent. Giggsy did it year in, year out.
Sometimes you might have the odd season where he might not be a 10 out of 10 but you’re on about that season it’s about big games. Look what Giggsy did in the semi-final, tell me another player on this planet that could have done what he did against Arsenal?
CARRAGHER: If he was playing that well, why was he sub?
KEANE: Because there was rotation, we had Jesper Blomqvist behind him, that’s what wins you big trophies, a very, very good player, excellent player.
CARRAGHER: Would you put him in?
KEANE: He doesn’t quite make this team but you need a squad to win the big trophies, you’re aware of that aren’t you?
It’s not just about 11. That’s why Liverpool rotate their players, that’s why they didn’t want to play in the FA Cup. Rest and rotation, and we had to do it. Let’s hope they win three trophies this year.
CARRAGHER: Are we there yes?
KEANE: Sorry?
CARRAGHER: You missed the final didn’t you?
KEANE: I was suspended, yes.
CARRAGHER: I know yes, a lack of discipline.
KEANE: And I was injured. I got an injury, yes, in the FA Cup final.
CARRAGHER: So you’re putting Giggs in instead of Mane on the back of scoring three goals and two assists?

KEANE: Yes. But like I said, the key to me is to be a consistent player.
CARRAGHER: But Mane’s career hasn’t finished, you can’t judge Mane on his career.
KEANE: I’ve got loyalty towards Giggsy, I don’t know Mane.
