Speaking in L’Équipe following Marseille’s 1-0 win over Olympique Lyonnais, former OM & Fulham striker Steve Marlet praised the mentality of Igor Tudor’s side, and that victory was deserved for the Olympians last night:
Marlet praised Marseille’s ability to “get the game going” by using five attacking players in combination with the two wing-backs Nuno Tavares and Jonathan Clauss. On the wingbacks, he praised them for putting “a lot of pressure” on Lyon, saying that “they set the pace”.
Tagliafico blocked an Alexis Sánchez chance in the 13th minute, which Marlet branded as “miraculous”, but he claimed that the lead was deserved from the corner, which was found “with a devilish trajectory by Veretout for Gigot’s header”. However in the second half, Marlet says “it was more balanced, but they managed it very well, without panicking.”
Marlet also talked about seeing the game as a response to Marseille’s European exit mid-week against Tottenham Hotspur (1-2), saying that the hosts “could have sunk after their recent poor performances and in particular this painful elimination from Europe.”
He praised the Olympian’s mentality, which he believes is “a good sign for them”. The former Fulham striker warns however that fans “must remain cautious and wait for the trip to Monaco” in order to see whether Igor Tudor’s side have fully recovered mentally from the draining and disappointing defeat against Tottenham.
