Connacht have announced that exciting wing John Porch has put pen to paper on a new two-year contract at the United Rugby Championship outfit.

The new deal will keep the Australian finisher at the Irish province until the end of the 2024/25 campaign, which is fantastic news for their supporters.

A favourite since joining the Sportsground in 2019, Porch has scored 17 tries in 72 appearances and arrived after impressing on the Sevens circuit.

Worked with Andy Friend at Australia Sevens

It was in that arena where Porch had previously worked with coach Andy Friend and he has gone from strength to strength since moving to Connacht.

“I’m really pleased to agree a contract extension with Connacht,” said Porch, whose side eased to a 61-5 Challenge Cup win against Brive on Saturday.

“I know there was some speculation about my future but I have decided I want to help this club go from strength to strength.

“I’m enjoying life in the West of Ireland and there are some really exciting plans for the future that I want to be a part of.”

Director of rugby Friend was delighted to keep hold of his fellow countryman and believes it is “brilliant” news for Connacht that the wing is staying put.

“Porchy has every attribute you look for in a back three player, so securing his services is a brilliant bit of news for the club,” the head coach explained.

“I know it was a very big decision for he and his wife, and it shows John’s affection for Connacht and willingness to help the club to continue to grow over the next few years.”

More Connacht player announcements to come

Connacht stated that further announcements on player contract extensions will follow later this week as they look to tie down their squad for 2023/24.

The victory over Brive on Saturday secured their safe passage to the knockout stages of the Challenge Cup ahead of their final pool clash with Newcastle.

Friend’s men currently sit in eleventh place in the United Rugby Championship standings with a record of five wins and seven defeat thus far in 2022/23.
