Speaking at his unveiling at AS Monaco, Chelsea loanee Malang Sarr (23) said that he is returning to Ligue 1 as a “different” player.
Sarr left OGC Nice in 2020 to join Chelsea on a free. He was almost immediately loaned out to Portuguese side FC Porto before returning to Stamford Bridge and featuring for Thomas Tuchel’s side, largely in cup competitions, last season.
Speaking about his return, Sarr said, “I discovered what was a very high level at Chelsea. I first did a preseason with the team, before being loaned to FC Porto, which made me grow and taught me a lot.”
He continued, “I think that the experiences that I have had outside of France in the past years have brought me a lot. I’m coming back (to France) completely different.”
Asked by Luke Entwistle about what he learned from experienced defender Thiago Silva (37) and now Real Madrid centre-back Antonio Rüdiger (29) in particular, he replied, “It’s quite easy to progress there, to be honest when you have the right mentality and you have the chance to learn alongside players like Antonio and Thiago. I took all of their advice because they know perfectly the requirements of the very high level.”

Returning to the Riviera, he won’t have to wait long to face his former side as Monaco make the short trip to the Allianz Riviera at the start of September. On the prospect of facing OGC Nice, Sarr said, “To be honest, the club and the supporters know that I always gave everything for the club. It will be a special match for sure. I’m just going to take it like any other match. I don’t know what will await me there, but I intend to go there and give the best performance possible and help my team get the win.”
