Following the official announcement of 2020/21 Ligue 1 winner Christophe Galtier as the new manager of Paris Saint-Germain on Monday night, GOAL have revealed a breakdown of the men who will be assisting the Marseille-born coach in his time in the capital.

First up, Thierry Oleksiak, who will act as the primary assistant to Galtier. The two men first met at Angers in the 1993-94 season, when they both plied their trade for the club. Since then, they have been good friends and stayed in touch, as well as working side by side at Saint-Étienne (2009-2017), Lille (2017-2021) and most recently Nice (2021-22).

João Sacramento will operate as Galtier’s second assistant at PSG. The Portuguese’s name is likely to ring bells, particularly as a result of his work with José Mourinho at both Tottenham (2019-2021) and AS Roma (2021). The 33-year-old also has experience in French football, having assisted Christophe Galtier in his time at Lille and, before him, Marcelo Bielsa. He will also benefit from his experience with Luis Campos at Monaco (2013-2016), where he worked as a video analyst. It is reported that it was Sacramento who convinced Galtier to modernise his training methods taking into consideration more data.

In charge of physical preparation will be Pedro Gomez Piqueras who, similarly, was brought into the Lille fold by then Sporting Director Luis Campos. The Spaniard spent last year working at Grenada, having been shown the door by Lille president Olivier Létang.

Working alongside Piqueras will be compatriot Alberto Piernas, who spent last year with him at Grenada. Piernas, much like the rest of the backroom staff, has already tasted success with Christophe Galtier, having arrived in Lille in 2020. His work with Piqueras ensured a healthy LOSC squad for their title-winning season.

The only man who will be working alongside Galtier without having been a part of the Lille trophy-winning season is Isidre Ramón Madir. The Spaniard will be responsible for PSG’s video analysis going into the new season and will bring experience from his work at Barcelona, Valencia, Watford and Nice, where he supported Galtier last season. Much like Sacramento, Madrid is a strong believer in data and sports science.

The final cog in the PSG machine this season will be Olivier Gagne, who will not be a part of Galtier’s staff per se, but will have an important role as Assistant Director of Professional Football nonetheless. The 36-year-old will essentially function as Luis Campos’ right-hand man, having met the Sporting Director in Monaco. It was also here where he met a young Kylian Mbappé, with whom he became close during his time in the Principality. Once again, Campos brought Gagne along for the Lille adventure, and will attract him to a third new club. While at Lille he managed transfer logistics and medical questions, at Paris his role will be to link all the parts of the sporting body, as well as to take on the authority of Campos when the Sporting Director is absent.
