Foot Mercato claim this evening that despite reports linking Zinédine Zidane with the Paris Saint-Germain job today, new football advisor Luis Campos is continuing to work with Christophe Galtier in mind as Mauricio Pochettino’s successor.
Pochettino is set to be sacked by Les Parisiens with one year left on his current deal, after a disappointing 18-month spell which nevertheless culminated in a Ligue 1 title. Campos has been charged with recruitment of players, but is also looking for a new manager to spearhead the new-look PSG project.
The two men worked together at Lille – which led to the 2020/21 league title – and have already spoken about working together at Paris Saint-Germain. Galtier has given his green light to move back up north – not least in the wake of his fallout with Nice’s Julien Fournier – and Campos has privately confirmed that the Frenchman is likely to be at PSG next season.
Before arriving at the French champions, Campos was assured he would be given freedom in terms of recruitment and managerial choices, helped by former director of sport Antero Henrique. They have told Galtier they would like to instate a 3 at the back formation, which diverges from his 4-4-2 speciality, but their good understanding could lead to some tactical flexibility.
Nevertheless, the Qatari owners want Zinédine Zidane and talks have taken place in the last few months, with an agreement yet to be found. Given that the former Real Madrid manager is not Campos’ choice, his signing would serve to undermine the new head of football at PSG, just days into his reign.
