RMC report that despite AS Monaco Sporting Director Michael Emenalo’s best efforts, the Ligue 1 side have lost out to Real Betis for Portuguese defensive midfielder William Carvalho.

Betis are paying €18m plus €10m in bonuses for the player, despite Monaco asking for Sporting to delay accepting the offer so that the Principality side could potentially make a move. Monaco did not bid because the board wanted to take their time, contrary to Emenalo’s recommendation.

Sporting Portugal themselves will rue the fact that they rejected a loan with practically obligatory option to buy worth €40m offer from PSG for the player in the January window.
