Rhys Webb’s moment of madness cost Ospreys as they fell to a 35-20 defeat at the hands of Saracens in the Champions Cup round-of-16.

The Wales scrum-half gifted Saracens replacement Duncan Taylor a try when he tried to take a lineout quickly.

Costly blunder from Rhys Webb

The centre, who had just come onto the pitch, read Webb’s intentions perfectly, picked off the pass and strolled in under the posts untouched.

It was his first touch of the ball in the game, and his teammates mobbed him after dotting down.

Webb’s gaffe came at a crucial time in the game as Saracens led 23-20, with the try taking the Premiership side more than a converted try ahead.

This was after the Ospreys squandered an early lead.

Owen Farrell opened the scoring with a penalty, but the Welsh replied through full-back Michael Collins who dotted down after some slick work from centre Keiran Williams.

Owen Williams converted the try and added a penalty to give Ospreys a 10-3 advantage.

Webb played a key role in his side’s second try when he intercepted, sparking the attack that finished with Keiran Williams sliding over out wide.

However, Saracens rallied back with Farrell slotting a penalty and adding the extra two on a Max Malins try before the break.

Two second-half penalties from Owen Williams kept the pressure on Saracens and looked to be setting Ospreys on course for a surprise win.

It was not to be, as Alex Goode’s kick-through was picked up by Andy Christie, who sent Malins over for his second.

Webb’s quick lineout that led to Taylor’s try shifted momentum squarely in Saracens’ favour, and Mark McCall’s side made the most of it to close out the game.

Hooker Tom Woolstencroft crashed over to add the icing on the cake for the Premiership outfit, who will now face the daunting task of tackling the defending champions La Rochelle at Stade Marcel Deflandre next week.
