London Irish number eight So’otala Fa’aso’o proved that huge, legal tackles are possible after cutting Saracens’ Hugh Tizard in half.
Midway through the second period of the Premiership game, Sarries were leading 20-13 when Ivan van Zyl had the ball with Tizard looking to cut a line off him.
Fa’aso’o easily telegraphed what was going to happen and before the scrum-half had even passed the ball, the Exiles back-row steamed towards the hosts’ second-row.
Hospital pass
Van Zyl still decided to go through with the move and duly delivered the classic hospital pass, which led to Fa’aso’o scything down Tizard.

Although it was perhaps not the most advisable decision from Saracens’ Van Zyl, credit must go to Fa’aso’o whose technique was perfect.
He could have easily got it wrong and taken his opponent high but still gave himself plenty of margin for error should Tizard have dipped at the last second.
It was described by RugbyInsideLine as the “hit of the season,” before they added: “Great to see big hits being promoted. It’s what the sport is about!”
Meanwhile, Paul Williams said: “Massive, beautiful, legal hits are possible.”
The tackle also enabled the excellent commentator Nick Mullins to say one of his classic lines as he stated: “Crikey, that deserved one of those government text alerts,” in reference to the UK government’s emergency alert which was sent to people’s phones at 3pm as a trial, warning them if danger was incoming.

Ball Carrier also created an excellent meme based around that alert, with the scheme not exactly going swimmingly. Some got it early, others late while many didn’t receive it at all.

Owen Farrell in the dock
One person who wasn’t pleased with the hit was Saracens captain Owen Farrell, who was marched back 10 metres for something he said to referee Adam Leal.
It wasn’t clear on the ref mic what was said but Progressive Rugby felt that Farrell could have been complaining about the tackle itself, which of course was completely legal.
Are we going mad or does Owen Farrell get Saracens marched back 10 by referee Adam Leal for saying “the tackle was dangerous sir” after So'otala Fa'aso'o’s huge but entirely legal tackle on Hugh Tizard yesterday?#SARvLIR pic.twitter.com/WJNxZcIvNm
