Chris Sutton has accused Liverpool of complacency as they underestimated “whipping boys” West Ham in their 1-1 draw on Monday night.
The Reds have enjoyed fantastic results in the recent past against West Ham with two 4-0 wins and two 4-1 triumphs since 2017 – but their draw at the London Stadium on Monday means City can now leapfrog them on Wednesday evening.
In reality, the result could have been worse for Jurgen Klopp’s men as the Hammers wasted a number of chances to win the match, while Liverpool‘s opening goal was a yard offside.
“The aggregate result in this fixture was 16-2 in the last four games, so Liverpool would have come into this fixture thinking ‘these are our whipping boys’,” Sutton said on BBC 5Live.
“To come away with a point they maybe didn’t deserve, they will have lost confidence.
“They have not been convincing and the juggernaut of Man City chasing them is ominous.
“They have to go away and look at themselves at the top of the table and grow their confidence because this isn’t a sprint for the title yet.”
