Pep Guardiola claimed Manchester City were the best team in the history of the Premier League during a passionate post-match speech, according to reports.

Second-half goals from Bernardo Silva and Leroy Sane took City back to the top of the league with a 2-0 Manchester derby win, one point clear of Liverpool with three games left to play, and highlighted the gulf in class between Manchester United and the Premier League leaders.

And The Sun claims that Guardiola was so ecstatic with his side after the match that he said: “That is why you’re the best team this league has ever seen.”

The team is then understood to have broken out into song, singing Sane’s name – scorer of the second goal – to the ‘Buddy Holly tune from TV programme Heartbeat’.

Many pundits reckon the match against United was City’s last big hurdle to overcome on their way to the Premier League title, with Burnley, Leicester and Brighton to play in their final three matches.

Guardiola said recently: “It’s tough because there are still three games to play — it is incredible, but it is what it is — and we still need to win our remaining games.

“I’ve told the players to rest, relax, don’t talk too much, don’t watch TV, just eat well and sleep because on Sunday we have another difficult game.

“Then we have eight days to prepare for Leicester, then another week to get ready for Brighton — hopefully, they will not need points to stay up!

“It’s game by game and that’s all we can do.”
