Chris Sutton claims Celtic made “an offer” to Jose Mourinho to return to management.

The Portuguese coach has been out of management since getting the sack at Manchester United in December, although it’s understood he has not been short of offers.

We predicted that he would take the whole year out to recharge, but it seems that Celtic have other plans.

Former Hoops striker Sutton says that the Scottish Premier League champions have submitted an offer to Mourinho to take over from Neil Lennon this summer.

Lennon replaced Brendan Rodgers until the end of the season in February and is one win away from a clean sweep of domestic trophies for the third successive season. But his long-term future is uncertain.

Sutton would rather Celtic looked elsewhere, telling BT Sport that his preferred option of newly-unemployed Massimiliano Allegri “is not going to happen”.

“It’s so tough to stand here and say who will be the next Celtic manager because it’s a big job,” he continued.

“There’s going to be a lot of managers in for it. Mourinho was heavily linked and I’m led to believe that there was something in that in terms of there being an offer.

“But why would he take the Celtic job? I just don’t get it.

“I don’t know the exact terms but there was an offer.”
