There are three main reasons that Manchester United decided against signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, according to reports.

The Gabon international has scored 49 goals in 77 appearances since joining the Gunners in January 2018 from German side Borussia Dortmund.

Aubameyang is one of a handful of players that have avoided stick in an Arsenal shirt this season with eight goals in his 12 appearances in all competitions so far this term.

While Aubameyang’s goalscoring has continued this season, Manchester United have struggled for goals after allowing Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez join Inter Milan.

The Red Devils have only managed 13 goals in ten Premier League matches this campaign, a tally which was boosted significantly by their 3-1 victory over Norwich City on Sunday.

And The Athletic claims that the Red Devils ‘did not develop their interest’ in signing the prolific Aubameyang during his time at Dortmund because United were not ‘not suitably convinced’.

David Ornstein in The Athletic said:

‘Whether it was the valuation of around £70 million, his age (he turned 30 in June) or his fit in a team that then-manager Jose Mourinho felt needed a striker who could press and hold the ball up, United did not develop their interest after watching Aubameyang live at many Bundesliga and Champions League games.

‘With top-scorer Zlatan Ibrahimovic suffering a serious knee injury in April 2017, the United instead focused on Romelu Lukaku and signed him from Everton that summer for £75 million.’
