Jurgen Klopp explains the importance of coaches Peter Krawietz and Pep Lijnders in his decision to sign an extended Liverpool contract to 2024.
The German boss has now agreed to the longest spell of his managerial career with the Reds and will remain assisted by Krawietz and Lijnders, who have also agreed deals until 2024.
Klopp revealed that talks have been ongoing for “a while” and he is relieved that speculation over his future can now end.
“The club was asking for a while already. We talked about it and it made sense before things are a bit intense.
“Maybe in the summer we would have started talking again and players would ask ‘how long is the manager here?’
“Four and a half years sounds like forever. It could be 9 years the longest spell ever at a club.
“For the next three and a half years now nobody has to talk about it
“Let’s try to make the best time of our lives and enjoy the ride, the journey.
“I never thought about leaving with the old contract. So many people I would miss and we thought come on it’s right.”
And Klopp says his coaching staff’s happiness was paramount in his decision to sign the new deal.
“It was clear for me. I had to ask them first they were happy about it. We enjoy the work together, the boys want to be part of the project as well. They are incredibly important to me.
“I have worked with Peter Krawietz probably 18 or 19 years.
“Pep Lijnders for four. One guy who develops everyday.
“We have really improved a lot. Bringing him into a new role refreshed the situation. An outstanding coach. Plenty of ideas. It was clear for me to [keep him]”
