Cyber cell sleuths of city crime branch arrested eight persons running a fake call centre in the Mayur Vihar area of Delhi on Saturday afternoon.

Crime branch officials said though the probe was based on a single complaint, it has now turned into a multi-crore scam in which the accused have cheated scores of people across the country on the pretext of sanctioning loans under what was called the ‘Prime Minister welfare schemes’.

Crime branch officials said the accused used two modi operandi, one in which they got data from certain companies and randomly called people offering them loans under the PM’s welfare schemes. In the second, they had uploaded a “loan” website on the internet using the same pretext to lure victims in.
