Anthony Bourdain, the chef and veteran broadcaster, has been found dead in his hotel room at the age of 61.

Bourdain, who was in France filming his latest TV series, was found in his hotel room after taking his own life,  US network CNN reported.

"It is with extraordinary sadness we can confirm the death of our friend and colleague, Anthony Bourdain," the network said in a statement.

"His love of great adventure, new friends, fine food and drink and the remarkable stories of the world made him a unique storyteller. 

"His talents never ceased to amaze us and we will miss him very much. Our thoughts and prayers are with his daughter and family at this incredibly difficult time."

Bourdain was found unresponsive in his hotel room on Friday morning by his close friend Eric Ripert, the French chef, according to CNN.

The award-winning TV presenter, once described as the "original rock star" of the culinary world, has seen his 11th series of his series "Parts Unknown" air on CNN last month.

US president Donald Trump paid tribute to the presenter on Friday: "I enjoyed is show, he was a character I have to say. I just want to extend my condolences and also to the family of Kate Spade."

Spade, a fashion designer, was found dead in her Manhattan apartment last week.

Who was Anthony Bourdain?

The chef and TV personality became a household name in 2000 with his best-selling account of sex and skillets, Kitchen Confidential. 

Born in New York, Bourdain ran a number of prestigious restaurants, including several years as the executive chef of Manhattan restaurant Brasserie Les Halles, before his television career.
