Mankato, Minn. – Minnesota State head wrestling coach Jim Makovsky has announced that Marc Harwood has been named assistant coach.
Harwood served as an assistant coach for Bloomsburg (Pa.) in 2012-13 after spending the previous two seasons as a wrestling instructor for Edge MMA and Fitness in Denver, Colo.

“We’re excited to announce the addition of Marc Harwood to our staff as our new assistant coach,” said Makovsky. “We wanted to hire someone that not only was good on the mat, but also someone that could relate well to our student-athletes and also help us in advancing the culture of Maverick Wrestling. Marc brings a wealth of experience and a broad skill set to Minnesota State and we’re confident he’ll be a great fit.”
Harwood graduated with a degree in Fine Arts with Emphasis in Graphic Design and minors in Art History and Communication from University of Nebraska-Lincoln in Lincoln, Neb., in 2007. Harwood, who wrestled for the Huskers and qualified for NCAA Division I championships, was a member of the UNL team that placed third at National Duals. He also placed multiple times at FILA and University Nationals in Freestyle and Greco.
Prior to working in Colorado, Harwood served as an assistant coach at Jackson County Central High School in Lakefield, Minn., where he helped lead the Huskies to a second straight state wrestling team championship. He also coached several individuals that went on to wrestle at the NCAA Division I level. He served as the head wrestling coach at Emmetsburg High School in Emmetsburg, Iowa where he helped the team qualify for Iowa State High School Team Tournament for the first time in five years and was named conference coach of the year. He also coached several wrestlers that placed at the Iowa State High School Tournament and went on to compete collegiately.
The Lakefield, Minn., native was a four-time Minnesota All-State high school wrestler for Jackson County Central (Minn.). A two-time state individual champion going 42-0 in both his junior and senior years, Harwood helped lead his team to back-to-back state titles. The owner of a career record of 192 – 25 as a prep, he earned academic all-state honors his senior year and was a three-year member of the Minnesota Storm Junior National Freestyle Wrestling Team. Harwood lettered five times in wrestling and two times in football, earning defensive MVP honors while helping to lead JCC to a Minnesota state high school grid title in 2001.
