Coming up tonight on Raw is the 3 hour Slammy Award show where they honor the best in WWE using various categories to determine the winners. I don’t fully agree with the awards, but I’ll be able to cover that next week when I do the 2010 WWE Johnny Awards (you can read the 2009 WWE Johnny Awards while you wait). What I’ll do here is list the categories, then give you a short take on who I think SHOULD win and who I think WILL win since WWE is booking the awards. Let’s get to it.
WWE Superstar of the Year (FAN VOTE)
– Randy Orton
– Edge
– Rey Mysterio
– John Cena
– Kane
– The Miz
SHOULD WIN: I don’t want to give away who my pick is because that’s a big award for the Johnny’s, but of this list I’d say Miz or Orton deserve it most.
WILL WIN: Probably Cena since it’s the fan vote and he’s most popular. It could be Orton. Nobody else really has a chance. And I doubt they tell us what percent of the vote they will get.
WWE Diva of the Year
– Winner to be determined via battle royal.
SHOULD WIN: Remember last year when Maria won and then she got fired soon after? I doubt that happens again. And I still think Mickie was robbed last year, by the way. But I digress. I think since she dominated the division, Michelle McCool is a viable candidate, but so is Natalya. Since I like Natalya better and think she’s more talented she is who I think will win.
WILL WIN: I think McCool wins, or maybe Laycool wins to honor Layla as well. They are the focal point of the division, like it or not. They probably booked it battle royal style to ensure the heel wins because otherwise they’d have no chance with the fan voting.
Shocker of the Year
– The Miz cashes in Money in the Bank, becomes WWE champion
– John Cena loses and is forced to join Nexus
– Nexus takes out McMahon
– Paul Bearer turns on The Undertaker
SHOULD WIN: The Bearer thing didn’t shock anybody with a brain. So it’s not that. The Cena thing is already irrelevant less than a month after it happened, so it’s not that. I think of the two choices left I’d go with Miz cashing in Money in the Bank because it was a big deal and it was recent too.
WILL WIN: I think either Miz or Nexus wins. They will probably book it so Miz wins because I don’t see him wining anything else. It’s smart booking to have your current champion win one of these awards. Maybe they can put the Slammy in the briefcase they are still carrying around?
Knucklehead Moment of the Year
– Big Show unmasks a bald C.M. Punk
– Santino Marella gets out-danced by Vladimir Kozlov
– Beth Phoenix eliminates Great Khali from the Royal Rumble
– Lay-Cool beaten by Mae Young
SHOULD WIN: I think Beth eliminating Khali from the Rumble was an awesome moment that deserves an award. I marked out huge for that. I liked Big Show unmasking Punk simply for Punk’s facial expressions. He sold it perfectly.
WILL WIN: It says Knucklehead in the title, the movie is now out on DVD and they are promoting the hell out of it. I’d assume that means Big Show wins this.
Despicable Me Award
– C.M. Punk sings “Happy Birthday” to Rey Mysterio’s daughter
– Sheamus attacks Triple H with lead pipe while The Game talks about Shawn Michaels
– Nexus attacks Ricky Steamboat and WWE Legends
– Kane buries The Undertaker alive
SHOULD WIN: All decent choices. I think Punk singing Happy Birthday was the kind of Jake Roberts-like creepy heel moments that I used to love growing up a wrestling fan. That’s the best of this bunch.
WILL WIN: I think Sheamus wins. They just booked him as King of the Ring and the feud with Triple H will likely continue in the new year, so to keep that fresh in people’s minds they will give him the award for this. Outside shot for Kane as the current World Champion too.
Holy Shit Move of the Year (Shit is censored on WWE.com. Not here!)
– Kofi Kingston hits Drew McIntyre with leg drop off ladder through announce table
– John Cena sends Batista onto a car and through the stage with two Attitude Adjustments
– Randy Orton delivers RKO to a flying Evan Bourne
– John Morrison dives off set onto Daniel Bryan and The Miz
SHOULD WIN: RKO on Bourne. No doubt about it. It was a memorable spot that was well timed and worked very well. Plus I like that it happened within the confines of a regular match in the ring rather than something outside the ring like the other three on here.
WILL WIN: I think they’ll recognize that the RKO on Bourne was the best spot. I like all of the others too. Outside chance that the Cena one wins just because they love Cena so much.
Guest Star Shining Moment of the Year
– Mike Tyson punches out Chris Jericho
– Pee Wee Herman vs. The Miz
– Florence Henderson kisses Great Khali
– William Shatner sings WWE ring entrances
SHOULD WIN: Got to be Shatner for his singing. That was classic. The only other one of these I really liked was Tyson punching out Jericho although that was just good, but not great.
WILL WIN: I think Pee Wee trash talking The Miz is going to win although hopefully WWE’s smart and gives it to Shatner. I don’t think the other two have a decent shot.
“Oh Snap” Meltdown of the Year
– Big Show destroys Jack Swagger’s trophies
– Edge destroys the Raw GM’s computer
– Alberto Del Rio injures Rey Mysterio’s arm with steel chair
– Batista quits WWE
SHOULD WIN: The Show thing was mostly comedy, Del Rio injuring Rey was a good angle and Batista quitting WWE was fun for fans of the good guys. However, I liked Edge destroying the computer the best out of this group because of how ridiculous it was. I also think a lot of people hate the computer GM, so when it happened it got a bigger pop than you might think.
WILL WIN: It will probably be Edge seeing as how he’s #1 contender for the World Title. If Batista wins it could lead to people thinking he might be back soon. I’m not sure about that.
WWE Moment of the Year
– Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels shake hands
– Nexus debuts and attacks John Cena
– The Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels in Michaels’ final match
– Kane wins Money in Bank, cashes in on same night
SHOULD WIN: Hart & Michaels embracing in the ring should win. A lot of us never thought it would happen, but after 12 plus years of tension it did. It was the first Raw of the year on January 4th and to me the best moment. I’ll have plenty to say about it in the Johnny Awards, that’s for sure. You can make a case for Undertaker/Michaels too because it was the Match of the Year (MOTY) and also because it was Shawn’s last match.
WILL WIN: I think Nexus attacking Cena is the winner here. I doubt Michaels or Hart are even there. They’ll likely want to give this award to something that is current. Plus from a storyline perspective you can make a good case for Nexus attacking Cena due to the fact that it came out of nowhere and became a top angle for the second half of the year. I really have no problem with it winning this award.

That’s all for now. The Raw Deal goes up tomorrow with my thoughts on the Slammy Awards. And then next Monday the 2010 WWE Johnny Awards are up.
